Health & Safety Management Standard - OHSAS 18001

Why is Health & Safety Management your concern?

The risks to business from failing to manage workplace health and safety are significant. We are constantly reminded, in a very public manner, of the implications, both civil and statutory, for companies and their owners who fail to protect employees. In many instances such failures arise from lack of knowledge rather than deliberate actions on behalf of the business owner. However, in all instances, the business (and its owners) has to bear the cost of the health and safety failure.

How do I ensure that I manage my risks?

The most effective way to manage health and safety risks is to implement an Occupational Health & Safety Management system and the recognised standard of excellence for Occupational Health & Safety Management is OHSAS 18001.

OHSAS 18001 is based on the principle of risk management and is modelled on the ISO series of international standards and can be easily integrated with other risk management systems (e.g. those addressing quality, environmental, or information security risks).

To demonstrate that it has adopted OHSAS 18001 and has safe systems of work, a company needs to have its achievement independently validated - this process is called certification.

What are the benefits of OHSAS 18001?

Companies who become independently certified to OHSAS 18001 can demonstrate a number of benefits to both internal (staff, management, shareholders) and external concerns (clients, regulators, suppliers). These include:

  • adopting a recognised solution to risk management
  • operating to best practice
  • providing a safe workplace
  • having a framework for legal compliance
  • reducing risk for its stakeholders

In addition, certification allows companies to:

  • benchmark their control over health and safety matters
  • access external expertise to improve their businesses
  • demonstrate compliance to their own controls
  • improve their profile
  • plan effectively for an ever changing legal environment
