Dr John Ryan addresses MEUC about energy efficiency

Energy Efficiency in the European Union

Today Dr John Ryan spoke at a Major Energy Users Council meeting at the London Southbank University alongside Vilnis Vesma about the developments in Energy Management and energy efficiency in the European Union.

He addressed concerns around the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) proposed “Energy Savings Opportunities Scheme”, based on Article 8 of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive, (2012/27/EU) which must be enacted into legislation by the 5th of June 2014.

Article 8 of the directive requires all member states to introduce a regime of regular energy audits for large enterprises. These audits must happen every four years and they must commence by the 5th of December 2014. These quite radical changes aim to promote the uptake of cost-effective energy efficiency measures and to help reduce energy consumption in industry as the European Union tries to redress the energy imbalance within the EU.

Furthermore this new scheme will target several major business types. “Large enterprises” as laid out in this act are businesses with greater than 250 employees or organisations with a turnover greater than €50 Million and an annual balance sheet of over €43 million. All identified businesses, organisations and companies will be required by law to participate in Energy Savings Opportunity scheme. However public sector bodies are not affected by Article 8 as there are other sections of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive that govern public sector action on energy efficiencies.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change says that Britain should accrue benefits of approximately €1.9 billion if only 6% of potential savings identified through assessment in buildings and industrial process are implemented but that savings of up to £3 Billion are potentially possible.

These massive savings are vitally important for a country and a continent trying to control its future energy consumption as well as businesses that are aiming to reduce their costs and maintain their competitive advantage in the market place.

Thankfully an accredited ISO 50001 Energy Management Certification is the simplest mechanism that fulfils this legislated requirement, simplest mechanism to meet the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme

ISO 50001 is already proven internationally to bring real, verified savings to clients. So Find out why Certification Europe are the recognised industry experts in energy management.
