“SMEs – The Key To The Future” at the ISME Annual Conference

John Ryan Delivers Stirring Opening Speech at the ISME Annual Conference

The Irish Small & Medium Enterprises Association (ISME) is hosting its Annual SME national conference in the RDS in Dublin today. The association which is chaired by John Ryan, who is also Director of Services at Certification Europe is hosting the event under the theme of “SME’s- The Key to the Future.”

The conference event which is being chaired by Matt Cooper (Journalist and Presenter of the “Last Word” on Today FM) contains a stellar line up of speakers who are set to debate the obstacles facing the SME and business sector in Ireland at present.

Opening the event at 8.30am this morning Dr John Ryan delivered a hard hitting opening speech in which he cchastised the Government, by outlining that the complete lack of progress on the Croke Park agreement was a significant contributory factor to the on-going excessive exchequer deficit, leading to austerity being foisted on the private sector to pay for the failure of Government to address public sector costs and inefficiencies.

The ISME Chairman called for

  • An independent body to oversee the Croke Park agreement.
  • An immediate cessation of all pay rises in the public sector, including so called increments.
  • Immediate cessation of perks and benefits schemes in public sector.
  • An increase in the outsourcing of work from public to private sector to achieve a minimum of €1 billion over 5 years.
  • Introduction of ‘career averaging’ on all public sector pensions.
  • Increase in recruitment of high calibre individuals from outside public service to leadership roles.

In conclusion Ryan stated; “Strong government leadership, lacking to date, is required now more than ever to implement badly needed cost cuts in the public sector. The basis on which the Croke Park agreement was made is flawed, its oversight is flawed, the continued and blinkered approach to keeping it in place at all costs is flawed. Any concessions on this required action will continue to send out the wrong message at the wrong time, nationally and internationally, and do irreparable damage to our reputation and the economy.”
