Dawn Meats Achieves ISO 14001 Certification

The Dawn Meats facility in Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo, Ireland has recently been awarded with the ISO 14001 Environmental Management SystemCertification. The certificate, awarded by Certification Europe, demonstrates that the Ballyhaunis site meets international best practice for environmental management.
Through a series of detailed audits conducted by Certification Europe the certification body was satisfied that the site is worthy of ISO 14001 Certification. The implementation of various environmentally focused initiatives, work practices changes, introduction of technology and equipment, environmental training records of staff, evidence of top level management and commitment to the Environmental Policy contributed to the success of achieving certification.
As part of their ISO 14001 environmental strategy, the company focused on three key areas, Water Consumption, Energy Consumption and Product Packaging. Water Savings were achieved with the installation of new steriliser equipment, using water reuse technologies and changing work practices in the abattoir cleaning process. These initiatives have reduced water use by over 10,000 m3 per annum. Substantial Energy Savings have been achieved through the implementation of a heat recover system, which is estimate to reduce the use of up to 70,000 litre of oil per year.
