ISO 14001 Environmental Management System standard

While 30 EU member state Environment ministers gather in Dublin to discuss the common environmental policy for the 2030 framework for climate and energy policies we take a look at why an Environmental Management System is important for the future of any nation or organisation.

An ISO 14001 Environmental Management System helps organisations to identify what their impact on the environment is. Any organisation can ignore their interaction with the environment, assuming it is not doing damage or unaware of where its waste or by-products are going so long as they have not taken account of what their waste is.

By introducing a planning phase where organisations are required to identify their waste via a detailed audit of their business procedures it makes it clear not only what affect on the environment they are having but also how this affect should be managed effectively. For instance an organisation generating a lot of waste paper or cardboard should look into recycling this. Waste organic matter should be composted. It is only with a thorough examination of where a  business touches the environment that we can begin to truly manage that organisation’s waste.

This in turn enables businesses to begin to make savings  via their environmental management system. Composting and recycling waste can be cheaper than commercial rubbish removals. Recycled materials may be used again in production processes or lead to other business opportunities.

An Environmental Management System is important for the future

By operating an environmental management system, such as the ISO 14001 standard, that uses a policy of “Plan, Do, Check, Act” with a review element to enable a cycle of continuous improvement, organisations are able minimise their environmental footprint and diminish the risk of pollution incidents.  A well working environmental management system provides operational improvements and helps to ensure compliance with relevant environmental legislation

The EU ministers will debate enacting a European level environmental management system as laid out in the Green Paper for the “2030 Framework for Climate and Energy Policies”. A strong, EU wide, set of legally binding legislation would enable member states to identify where the large environmental impacts are occurring in each nation state. This kind of forward planning would allow the EU’s environmental ministers to begin to create coherent national policies that tie in with the overall aims that will be laid out in the “2030 Framework for Climate Change”.

It is only through these actions like these that will we see the implementation and review that will give us the continuous improvement that many businesses enjoy and that would lead to a greener EU for all its citizens.
