Energy Saving Tips

What you can do to reduce your energy costs with ISO 50001

Energy consumption in the commercial sector is approximately 3 times the rate compared to the residential sector. Climate change is becoming and ever more prominent issue, and there are many ways in which you can do your part to help the environment and reducing the impact climate will have in the future. Implementing ISO 50001 Energy Management will ensure your organisation has the highest standard, internationally recognised Energy Management System, and there are many small, simple steps you can take to implement the standard and be on your way to being more energy efficient in the office or in your home.

Heating

Did you know that lowering your thermostat in your home or office by just 1ºC can reduce your heating bill by up to 10%? The highest proportion of energy demand is for space heating/cooling, hot water, and lighting.  Many people leave their thermostat much higher than it needs to be. If it is above 20ºC turn it down a degree. Whether doing this in your home or office, you won’t notice the difference until you get your heating bill!

Have you ever thought about how your windows affect the temperature in a room? It is recommended to install double glazed windows throughout a building as thermal loss through thin glazing or poor seals can be a common culprit in unnecessary energy usage. Also implementing simple energy smart policies in your organisation can make a big difference. For example, establish a policy to make sure that meeting room doors are kept closed when not in use to avoid heat escaping. A significant as aspect of implementing ISO 50001 is about getting all levels of the organisation to buy into the procedures that reduce the organisation’s energy usage and in turn reduce costs.

Lighting

Turning lights off when you leave a room might be obvious to some people, but lights are often left on without any purpose in both homes and organisations. An example of lights being left on in homes is usually in the main hall and landing when nobody is in the room. The same applies to lights being left on in the canteen or meeting rooms while not in use. There is also little need to keep lights on in offices all night when everyone is gone home for the evening or the weekend. Simply turning these lights off – or going one step further and including smart sensors that switch lights off when no movement is detected – will not only make your organisation more energy efficient but will also show benefit on your energy bill.

Equipment/ Technology

Ever think you’ve turned your monitor off by putting the computer to sleep mode? The blank screen in fact is still using electricity as you’ve simply only put it on standby just like your TV at home. Does your office have an office kitchen/canteen installed? Small appliances and lights can all be considerable energy users, and by simply installing sensors that detect movement or turning the kettle or microwave off at the wall socket are just couple small ways to be more efficient with energy usage in the workplace.

As you can see there are plenty of small ways to make your home and organisation more energy efficient, and implementing ISO 50001 Energy Management can help you in understanding necessary procedures and the benefits of energy efficiency policies and practices in all areas of your organisation. Having an external energy audit carried out provides reassurance that you are on the right track at all levels, and if there are areas for improvement which you may have missed they will be highlighted to you.
