The ISO committee met last month in China to vote on the adoption of the Draft International Standard (DIS) 50001. There were objections made against the DIS as it was felt it may be departing too much from the European Energy Management Standard EN 16001. However, DIS 50001 made it through the meeting and will be passed to the ISO secreteriat for publication as a Final Draft International Standard (FDIS).
It is expected that the FDIS will be available in early January 2011 and published as a formal standard in Q2 or Q3 next year.
Certification Europe will be posting information on the introduction of ISO 50001 as it becomes available and companies currently certified to EN 16001, the European Energy Management standard should look out for information on the transition from EN 16001 to ISO 50001.
