What is ISO 14001?

Climate change, sustainability and environmental impact are major focuses for businesses in the global drive to net zero. Environmental management systems play a vital role in businesses looking to measure, manage and control their environmental impact.

ISO 14001 was developed by the International Organization for Standardization. It is a systematic framework used by businesses to manage the immediate and long term environmental impacts of an organisation’s products, services and processes. By completing ISO 14001 certification, your organisation can assure stakeholders that your environmental management system meets international industry-specific environmental standards.

ISO 14001 certification provides a framework for environmental management best practices to help organisations:

  • Measure and control their environmental footprint.
  • Control the risk of pollution incidents.
  • Deliver operational improvements through effective resource use.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant environmental legislation and regulations.
  • Develop their organisation in line with the principle of continuous improvement.

What are the benefits of ISO 14001?

Customers, stakeholders and investors are increasingly expecting organisations to manage their environmental impact. ISO 14001 certification demonstrates an organisation’s approach to controlling all environmental issues relevant to its operations, such as resource use, wastage, sewage, air, water and soil contamination. Over 300,000 certifications have been awarded to organisations in 171 countries.

ISO 14001 certification allows organisations to:

  • Apply for tenders from companies that require ISO 14001 certification.
  • Identify cost savings with an emphasis on resource, waste and energy management.
  • Improve employee engagement and boost customer trust in your organisation.
  • Improve your corporate image and credibility with stakeholders and investors.
  • Quantify, monitor and control the impact of operations on the environment.
  • Ensure organisational compliance with legislation and regulations.
  • Improve the environmental performance of the supply chain.
  • Potentially decrease public liability insurance costs for your organisation.
