Pharmaceutical sector
The Irish pharmaceutical sector is highly advanced, incorporating the latest technology, state of the art equipment and strict quality control procedures.
Today the pharmaceutical sector in Ireland is worth over €40 billion. Ireland is the largest exporter of medicinal and pharmaceutical products and is now the largest net exporter in the EU accounting for 50% of all exports. The growth of the industry can also be seen in its recruitment.
In 2005, there were only 2,500 people employed in the sector, where today there are nearly 25,000 directly employed, with an additional 25,000 providing supporting services to the sector.
In order to remain on the cutting edge, ISO standards in energy consumption, environment and quality management have become commonplace within the Pharmaceutical sector. In recent years the demand for information security management systems has grown and ISO 27001 has been a popular especially with organisations that already implement quality management systems. Certification Europe has worked with some of the leading pharmaceutical companies in Ireland partnering with them to become successfully certified to these relevant ISO standards and provided long-term success by providing training to ensure continuous improvement of their systems.
Reducing energy consumption and the environmental impact are key areas that all organisations try to tackle. Many pharmaceutical organisations have chosen to implement Energy Management System (ISO 50001). Effectively implementing the energy management standard can save up to 10% on energy usage within the first 12 months. Assessment and certification to ISO 50001 and other ISO standards provide pharmaceutical companies with the opportunity to continuously improve on existing systems, facilitating an increased return on investment, and in turn allowing more profitability and growth in other areas of the business.
