What is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001:2018 is the internationally recognised standard that provides a systematic framework for organisations looking to enhance their energy management practices and improve their energy use. The framework sets out the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an EnMS within an organisation.

ISO 50001 is designed to help organisations take a proactive approach to managing energy, identify opportunities for energy savings and contribute to environmental sustainability.

The ISO 50001 standard outlines a number of requirements that organisations must meet to demonstrate their commitment to Energy Management Systems. These include

Organisational Context: Understanding the organisation’s internal and external context related to energy management.

Leadership Commitment: Demonstrating leadership’s commitment to energy management, aligning policies with strategic objectives.

Energy Use Assessment: Identifying and assessing energy consumption, risks and opportunities within the organisation.

Energy Risk Management: Implementing controls and procedures to manage energy-related risks effectively.

Energy Efficiency Promotion: Promoting energy efficiency and continual improvement throughout the organisation.

Performance Monitoring: Regularly assessing and enhancing energy performance and the EnMS.

Employee Engagement: Encouraging active participation of employees in energy management initiatives and decision-making.

Regulatory Compliance: Preparing the organisation to effectively respond to and comply with energy-related regulations and requirements.

Implementing ISO 50001

Ensuring your Energy Management System is ready for ISO 50001 certification involves commitment from the whole organisation. You may wish to have a Certification Body conduct a Gap Analysis to review the readiness of your Energy Management before going through the Certification Assessments.

As well as a Gap Analysis, Training Courses are also a good way to ensure your teams are prepared and understand what ISO 50001 certification involves. Becoming Certified to ISO 50001

Stage One

The initial assessment determines if the mandatory requirements of the standard are being met and if the management system is capable of proceeding to Stage 2.

Stage Two

The second assessment determines the effectiveness of the system, and seeks to confirm that the management system is implemented and operational.

Recommendation for Certification

At this point in the process we review any corrective actions taken to address findings raised at Stage 1 & 2. Certification may be recommended.

Certification Review & Decision

The organisations files are reviewed by an independent and impartial panel and the certification decision is made.

Certification Achived

Successful certification is communicated to the client. Certificates are issued.

Certification Europe can proudly offer accredited certifications from multiple Accreditation Bodies, including the Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB), the United Kingdom Accreditation Services (UKAS) via our group company, Amtivo, and APMG International, to meet rigorous international certification standards, delivering ISO expertise to assess and certify organisations around the world to multiple ISO standards.

To become accredited, Certification Europe is required to implement a Quality Management System, which is assessed by our Accreditation Bodies to determine that it meets International Standards. We’re audited annually to ensure our services meet the exact requirements of the relevant accreditation standards.

Certification Europe’s ISO 50001:2018 accreditation is accredited by INAB.

ISO 50001 is suitable for all types and sizes of organisations – from SMEs to government organisations and international corporations.

The internationally recognised standard is used by many industry sectors, with a focus on high-energy organisations such as manufacturing, transport, food & beverages, technology and construction.

ISO 50001 certification lasts for a three-year cycle and is subject to mandatory assessments every year to ensure compliance.

At the end of the three years, the organisation will be required to complete a re-certification assessment to continue certification for an additional three-year cycle.

Absolutely! ISO 50001:2018 has been created under the Annex SL structure. This structure has been designed to share the same features across multiple standards for documentation, policies, procedures and processes.

Organisations can implement an EnMS using in-house expertise or with third-party ISO consultants to support their implementation process.

An EnMS includes defining organisational goals, assessing and evaluating energy use across operations and sites, and implementing controls and systems to monitor and record processes and policies for managing energy use.

Certification Europe is an independent certification body and does not implement an EnMS. We provide expert-led ISO training.
