ISO 50001 certification

  • Achieve ISO 50001 certification with an internationally accredited certification body.
  • Measure, manage and reduce energy use and lower operational costs.
  • Reduce carbon emissions to meet environmental regulations and targets.
  • Demonstrate environmental credentials for tender applications and win customer trust.
  • Suitable for all types and sizes of organisations – from SMEs and charities to corporates.

What is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001 energy management system (EnMS) certification provides a framework for establishing energy management best practices to help organisations to improve their energy performance, including energy efficiency, use, and consumption. It is especially important following increased customer interest in net zero and carbon emissions following COP26.

The standard enables organisations to demonstrate their commitment to improving energy efficiency and to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions:

  • Establish frameworks for maintaining and building energy and cost savings.
  • Support organisational efforts to reduce energy consumption.
  • Help organisations migrate to net zero through reduced carbon emissions.
  • Deliver cross-site energy efficiencies and effectively monitor energy use.
  • Create a sustainable organisational culture.

What are the benefits of ISO 50001?

With customer and business focus on energy efficiency, carbon emissions, and net zero, stakeholders, shareholders, and customers are looking to organisations to actively monitor, control, and reduce energy usage. In addition to enhanced reputation, more efficient energy usage can reduce costs and reduce the risks of energy price spikes and supply interruption.

ISO 50001 certification allows organisations to:

  • Reduce energy usage by up 10% within the first 12 months.
  • Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and carbon footprint.
  • Assist in compliance with current and future voluntary or mandatory energy efficiency targets.
  • Improved corporate image and reputation among customers, clients and stakeholders.
  • Inform decision-making processes from system design through to operation and maintenance.
  • Increase energy awareness among staff members at all levels.
  • Improve operational efficiencies and maintenance practices.

There are over 19,000 active ISO 50001 certifications in 2020 worldwide, according to The ISO Survey.

How to become ISO 50001 certified

To be certified, your organisation must conform to the ISO 50001 management standard and implement an energy management system (EnMS). This is a framework that details the requirements and implementation of an energy management system that demonstrates an organisation’s commitment to improving its energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

We’ve certified hundreds of organisations to ISO standards, including Diageo, Greenstar and Liverpool Victoria. Certification Europe also provides ISO training. Contact our team to find out more.

If your organisation meets the requirements, Certification Europe issues an official certificate. Your organisation can use its ISO 50001 certification status in marketing and promotional materials.

ISO 50001 FAQs

ISO 50001 is suitable for all types and sizes of organisations – from SMEs to government organisations and international corporations.

The internationally recognised standard is used by many industry sectors, with a focus on high-energy organisations such as manufacturing, transport, hospitality, technology and construction.

ISO 50001 has been structured to be aligned with other popular industry management system standards, so it is possible to integrate an EnMS with your existing management system(s).

Find out how ISO 50001 can help your organisation prepare for SI 426/ESOS.

Certification Europe has operational experience in energy management in the EU, Africa and Asia.

ISO 50001:2018 is the recently revised international standard for energy management. As it follows the same High Level Structure (HLS) as other widely applied ISO standards, such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, it will be easier to integrate with other management systems.

ISO 50001 is a framework that details the implementation and requirements for an energy management system (EnMS). Organisations can implement an EnMS using in-house expertise or with third-party ISO consultants to support their implementation process.

An EnMS includes defining organisational goals, assessing and evaluating energy use across operations and sites, and implementing controls and systems to monitor and record processes and policies for managing energy use.

Certification Europe is an independent certification body and does not implement an EnMS. We provide expert-led ISO training.

ISO 50001 certification lasts for three years and is subject to mandatory audits every year to ensure compliance.

At the end of the three years, you will be required to complete a reassessment audit to receive the standard for an additional three years.

We’re accredited by the INAB and meet rigorous international certification standards, delivering ISO expertise to audit and certify ISO standards.

To become accredited, Certification Europe is required to implement a Quality Management System, which is assessed by an Independent Authorised Body (Irish National Accreditation Body) to determine that it meets International Standards.

We’re audited annually to ensure our services meet the exact requirements of the relevant accreditation standards.

ISO 50001:2015 is accredited by INAB (Irish National Accreditation Body).
