What is ISO 50001:2018?
ISO 50001 Energy Management System certification, provides a framework for establishing energy management best practice to help organisations to improve their energy efficiency plus make a return on investment by implementing ISO 50001. The standard enables organisations to establish the systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance, including energy efficiency, use, and consumption.
ISO 50001:2018 is an international standard. As it follows the same High Level Structure (HLS) as other widely applied ISO standards, such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, it will be easier to integrate with other management systems.
If you are already applying ISO 50001:2011, you will recognise most of the requirements in ISO 50001:2018. However, there are some changes from ISO 50001:2011 that you must prepare for in order to transition and comply with ISO 50001:2018.

ISO 50001 Accreditation
Accreditation is the process by which a certification body is recognised to offer certification services. To become accredited, Certification Europe is required to implement a Quality Management System which is assessed by an Independent Authorised Body (Irish National Accreditation Body) to determine that it meets International Standards. Certification Europe is audited annually to ensure its services meet the exact requirements of the relevant accreditation standards. ISO 50001:2018 has INAB Accreditation.

What industries implement ISO 50001?
The energy standard is applicable to organisations both large and small, irrespective of geographical, cultural or social conditions. ISO 50001 has been structured to be aligned with other popular industry management system standards, so it is possible to integrate an energy management system (EnMS) with your existing management system(s). Certification Europe has operational experience in energy management in the EU, Africa and Asia.
The energy management standard lasts for three years and is subject to mandatory audits every year to ensure that you are compliant. At the end of the three years, you will be required to complete a reassessment audit in order to receive the standard for an additional three years.
